Why this tool exists, who built it, and how to reach me.
WHY THIS EXISTS
Los Angeles is unusually hostile to discovery. The city is too big to wander into accidentally, too sorted by algorithm to surprise you, too defined by car routes that keep you on the same six streets. Most "guides" make this worse — listicles point everyone at the same twelve restaurants, the same three viewpoints, the same handful of "hidden gems" that stopped being hidden eight years ago.
This tool is built on a small bet: that an arbitrary instruction — go to Lincoln Heights, start at this bakery, walk this loop — is more useful than another best-of list. The wheel removes the pre-sort. You end up in a neighborhood you wouldn't have searched for, with a reason to be there, and the rest of the day is yours to make sense of.
The neighborhoods aren't ranked. The walks aren't optimized for photos. The coffee shops are working coffee shops, not paid placements. Where an entry is wrong, thin, or out of date — and there will be entries that are — please tell me. The point isn't to be definitive. The point is to be useful, then more useful.
WHO MADE THIS?
I'm Courtney. By day I work as a digital anthropologist and cultural strategist at a media agency, which is a long way of saying I get paid to read what cultures and subcultures are actually doing online, and to translate that into work that helps brands and institutions show up in the world without embarrassing themselves.
Most of that day-to-day is social listening, trend identification and validation, subculture mapping, and applying a cultural lens to strategy work across categories. This project is what happens when the same lens gets pointed at the city I live in instead of a brand brief. Every neighborhood entry is a small piece of cultural fieldwork — what defines the place, who's there, what's worth noticing, where to start. The format is borrowed from the kind of guide I'd actually want as a visitor. The point of view is mine, not my employer's.
CORRECTIONS, TIPS, MISSED INSTITUTIONS
Locals are the best editors of a project like this, and I'd rather hear it than not.
